Why is loading necessary on Phase 1 of the hCG diet?


The HCG Diet protocol also calls for eating a lot of food two days (while taking hCG) before going on the low calorie diet. During the loading people are basically increasing their storage glycogen and triglycerides due to the high calorie, carbohydrate and fat intake. Once they drop to the low calorie diet and glucose is restricted they don’t have a good source of fuel until their ketones kick in reports Dr. Rao.

Ketones levels can take anywhere from 2-7 days to stabilize and keep up with energy requirements there’s usually a several days to a week where there aren’t sufficient levels of glucose or ketones. This would otherwise cause the metabolism to slow down, but because of the loading people are able to tap into the storage form of sugar and fat (glycogen and triglycerides) to sustain them during the first week. If they gain a couple of pounds during loading that’s fine, that will get used up very quickly in the first week states Dr Rao.

Additionally when glycogen gets stored it stores with water and so some of that weight is water weight. 1 pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories, so if they gain 2 pounds overnight and they know they didn’t eat 3500 calories in excess of their body mass index then much of it is water and it will drop quickly during the first week as well reports Dr. Rao.
